​Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) is a natural bioluminescent protein from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. It is a 238 amino acid protein that fluoresces at ~510 nm when excited at ~488 nm and does not require any cofactors or substrates. Its utilization has had tremendous impact on cell biology and physiology and earned their developers the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
